Ever since its first public announcement, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile has been described as very controversial. From reports, the main concern about the film is that a murderer has been glamorized for entertainment. So we looked into what we can expect from the film that will be on Netflix this week!
About the film
– The film is directed by Joe Berlinger who also directed and produced another project about Ted Bundy on Netflix called ‘Conversations With A Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes’.
– After the release of the ‘Conversations With A Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes’, there was a lot of comments on Twitter talking about how attractive Bundy was. The official Netflix account ended up making this statement: “I’ve seen a lot of talk about Ted Bundy’s alleged hotness and would like to gently remind everyone that there are literally thousands of hot men on the service – almost all of whom are not convicted serial murderers.”
– The film is based on the memoir by Ted Bundy’s former Girlfriend Elizabeth Kloepher. It is called “The Phantom Prince: My Life with Ted Bundy.” The films will follow the storyline from how Kloepher saw it.
– The film was announced at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival. Zac was announced to star in the film at the same time and Lily Collins was announced in October of the same year alongside other stars.
– Some of the filming was done in a courtroom that was the U.S Post Office in Covington, Kentucky. Other locations include Clermont County jail which is near Cincinnati, Ohio.
– The film was first shown at the Sundance festival in Utah on the 26th January. The festival started on the 24 January exactly 30 years to the day since Bundy was executed.
– It was at the Sundance Film Festival that the film got a lot of backlash. Social Media users questioned the morality of the film. A lot of people criticused the films saying it was galmoursing the film when there were murder victims and families who were not being respected.
– Zac Efron has spoken a lot about how this film is not a glamourization of Ted Bundy but said that the film is for the victims. He has also said that the film should be “a warning message. I would love, necessarily my fans, but anybody who watches the movie, to really invest time in who you trust yourself with, and who you think you’re safe with.”
– Berlinger has also said that “the point of this movie is to portray deception and betrayal.”
– The name of the film came from the judge of Bundy’s case. He quoted the “crimes were extremely wicked, shockingly evil, vile and the product of design to inflict a high degree of pain.”
– Bundy’s lawyer has said to have agreed to the fact that he thinks Zac Efron looks similar to Bundy.
– In the film there is a scene set in a diner. This location was actually at “The Pepper Pod Restaurant”. This business has been open since 1956 and is still owned by the same family.
– One of the producers of the film has wanted to work with Efron for ages! Nicolas Chartier said “From his dramatic turn in Paperboy to his hilarious performance in Neighbors, he continues to impress audiences and critics alike with his extraordinary versatility and range. We couldn’t be more excited to see him in this amazing role.”
– To get into role, Lily Collins met with Elizabeth Kloepher and her daughter. She was able to look through photos and discuss her story.
– Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile will be on Netflix on the 3rd May 2019.
The real story
– Born in 1946 in Vermont.
– For his first few years he lived with his grandparents so his mother avoided the stigma of having a child out of wedlock. Bundy never knew the identity of his father.
– He studied at a number of universities, graduating from the University of Washington having studied psychology. He went on to study law but after a while stopped attending altogether. This was the same time that the first victims started going missing.
– Bundy had a number of jobs while studying, including working for a suicde hotline crisis center and an assistant to the Chairman of the Washington State Republican Party.
– Ted Bundy admitted to killing 30 victims but others believe that it could be as many as 100 + over the years 1974- 1978.
– He was arrested after being caught avoiding a patrol car. In the car items such as a ski mask and other suspicious objects were found.
– Once the police built up a case against him, Bundy was arrested but managed to escape twice from different prisons.
– At his trial, Bundy fired his representation and went on to represent himself.
– He had a lot of friends who did not believe that he was capable of committing the crimes he was accused of. Kloepfer (girlfriend) was convinced that Bundy just looked similar to the criminal and would not accept that Bundy was the murderer.
– Bundy received three death sentences. As a result he was executed by electric chair in Florida in 1989 aged 42.
