The ‘Who is Wilson Worldwide?’ series is a way of letting you get to know exactly who we are, whether you are a follower of what we do, someone looking to get to know a bit more about the industry, or just someone who happened to stumble upon us. The company is small in number but has a huge passion for creating the best possible content for your TV, and over the next few weeks you will get to know the people behind the ideas, when we ask them a little bit about themselves.
This week we speak to one of the newest members of the team, Yu Xiao! Yu Xiao, has just started interning with us at WWP and has already shown her passion for production and TV. We asked Yu Xiao to answer a few questions about herself!
What is your name?
Yu Xiao
What is your job title?
Intern
How long have you worked here?
Less than a month!
What were you doing before you worked here?
I was a student at the University of Leicester. My major is Media and Advertising MA.
What is the best thing about your job?
I get to create some passionate and creative film and television, I get to work with and learn from a dynamic team.
What is your favourite project that you have worked on?
Before I worked at Wilson Worldwide, I worked with a Chinese team to complete some video ads and micro-movies.
What made you want to work in tv production?
I love movies and TV shows which can bring people lots of emotions. I have many strange ideas, I like to create things!
For anyone wanting to work in TV production what advice would you give them?
First of all, you can never be without enthusiasm. This is an industry that requires enthusiasm and creativity. It may be a little bit different to what you think, but it is really cool. Secondly, don’t be afraid to fail. Creation can’t avoid occasional failures, don’t give up trying because of fear of failure. All you have to do is learn valuable things from each failure and avoid it next time. Finally, to be unique. I don’t want to tell you why, think for yourself.
Any hobbies outside of work?
Movies and animations. Is this perhaps a hobby within the scope of work? Painting and fiction, because I love creating, I like to record the thoughts in my mind and feel the thoughts of others. Travel and swimming, these two hobbies can bring me pleasure from both body and mind. I always think that life is the best psychotherapist. The more you experience, the richer and peaceful your mind is.
Favourite programme to watch that is on at the moment and why?
Doctor Who, maybe. I actually watch a lot of film and television in my daily life. Doctor Who is a classic British drama after all, it is about to release a new season. I like it very much because it is a great science fiction TV show, its plot concept, character design and shooting skills are brilliant, it is worth watching and learning.
Any secret talents/party tricks?
I can speak Japanese. In China, I often plan party games with my friends, but I never do it here.
What is your favourite quote or saying?
“成熟的稻穗垂首而立。”
Mature rice tends to stand on the ground with its head down, but everyone knows its value. This quote tells me to be a modest and kind person, and to try to learn everything to make myself perfect. By that time everyone can see your value without you saying it out loud.
