‘Yesterday’ is a film created by cinema giants and it is coming to cinemas this week! In a world where the Beatles are forgotten only one struggling musician can remember any of their songs. Instantly becoming an over night success when he plays them. Here is everything you need to know.
The film
Directed by Danny Boyle, who has worked on countless classics such as ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, and ‘127 hours’.
The story was written by Jack Barth and the screenplay was by Richard Curtis. Richard Curtis is also another person who has produced and written so many classics including ‘Love Actually’, ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral’, ‘Notting Hill’ and ‘Bridget Jones’, the list goes on and on.
The film stars Himesh Patel and Lily James. Patel has previously been in Eastenders and James is best known for her roles in ‘Mama Mia’ and ‘Cinderella’.
Filming started in April 2018.
It features Ed Sheeran who plays himself, Chris Martin from Coldplay was asked to be in the film but was unable to due to scheduling conflicts so Sheeran was asked instead. Boyle said ‘“He teased us rotten cos he found out we’d asked Chris Martin first for that part so he never let us forget that.”
Ed Sheeran said that the Beatles are his main inspiration.
The movie delayed the production of ‘Bond 25’. Boyle stepped down from directing Bond due to creative differences. “I think that obviously, being as they are, they want it their way and normally a director would accept that and go along with it. But I have this relationship with my writer that’s quite intense, passionate and loyal and I would not change him – precisely because I really liked what he was doing. Our idea was good, but they didn’t think so.”
One of the locations filmed at was the Birkenhead Tunnel, this has been a location for a number of films including, ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1’, and ‘Fast and Furious 6’.
20 songs were secured to be used for the film but only 17 appear. Getting the rights to these songs must have been really expensive but still not as expensive as it was to insure Leonardo Di Caprio’s face.
The font used for the movie is the same one that was used for the Beatles logo.
‘Yesterday’ is rated a 12A.
‘Yesterday’ has a run time of 1 hour 56 minutes.
Talking about the Beatles themselves, Boyle said, “Paul and Ringo gave their approval to a film that’s about them disappearing,” Boyle says, laughing. “That’s their sense of humour! John would have loved that.”
An extra playing in the film said that it was really hard to not sing along to any of the songs when they had to pretend to have never heard of them before. “This was very hard to do when we are in Liverpool and we all love the Beatles. Our lips would start to move to the songs without us knowing because how can you not sing along to a Beatles song?
Hamish spoke about how surreal it was to be filming with these cinema icons saying ‘I realised that it was just me, Danny and Richard in the room. Danny and Richard were sat by the window, talking to each other, and I was just looking over and seeing Danny Boyle and Richard Curtis talking to each other, just kind of going, ‘What is this? What’s happening? This is kind of crazy.'”
