A Day In The Life: Stuart Miles

For anyone aspiring to work in production, what better way to find out exactly what you could be signing up for by getting to know what we do day to day? Each week, we will follow one of the team as they explain a day in their life. This week we got to know a bit more about our development producer Stuart Miles, and now we attempt to keep up with him as he takes us through what he does day to day!

Morning

I never used to be a morning person but after years of hosting radio breakfast shows I have been beaten into submission! Now I sometimes find I am at my best first thing in the morning, and can get up write and have ideas before the madness of the day begins. Have I become that annoying person? I always check all the news feeds, social media and am keen to know what is going on in the world and who is setting the agenda for the day. I really like to be on top of all the trends and news worthy stories as they often involve talked about TV shows. It helps me sense the mood of the broadcasters where particular ideas are concerned.

During the day

I never know what I am going to be doing one day to the next. As well as working at Wilson Worldwide Productions I am still a broadcaster so am sometimes called on to do radio shows which may mean an early start with my alarm going off at 4am! Being involved in TV production and development isn’t like a normal job where you do set hours. I find I can come up with my best ideas when sat on the tube or out walking in the park and often a conversation with someone will inspire a thought. I have learnt to write this down as it’s so easy to forget. Having a real interest about people’s lives and their stories really helps, I trained as a journalist and am basically just nosey. I often chat to agents about talent that they are working with whom we feel the broadcasters may be interested in. I am currently working with one of the big management companies to secure a reality star to host a new relationship format we are developing. When I have a new idea I like to bounce it around with other members of the team as we have such a brilliant mix of people with all sorts of experience. Our head of development Duncan is a great sounding board and we will often be looking at new ideas and how we can improve them.

Evening

I like to keep fit as I have a business that encourages to people to look great for their age so that means I have no excuse! At the moment I am working with a men’s health magazine to try and transform my body by the end of the year. We have a long way to go lol! Watching TV is a big part of this job too and I enjoy documentaries. I always try and watch the shows that everyone will be talking about the next morning as I hate to miss out. Going out for dinner with my other half is a real treat for me as life can be a bit crazy and it really helps me to slow down. We recently discovered Georgian food, they do this amazing bread with cheese in the middle which is to die for. Just don’t tell my trainer!!!
